Slab, decking, or lawn: any of them will do, provided the surface is level enough that four seats do not list toward one another. The wicker weave and khaki tone sit well against pale stone or dark timber, and the set is light enough that you can shift it before the first guest arrives.
Because the pieces arrive flat and you build them where they will stand, the first task is to run the tape across your chosen spot and check it is flat. Retighten the fittings each spring. Until that first check is done, the set is not ready to hold anyone.
