The grey U-shaped sofa fills the living room where your household spreads out for the evening, not lined up in rows but facing each other across the open curve. You settle into the corner with your back to nothing, legs stretched toward the center where someone else has claimed the opposite arm.

You carry the flat boxes through the doorway and lay the pieces out on the floor where the frame will stand. The assembly happens in place, because the finished span is too wide to pivot through a standard hall. Once the legs are fixed and the sections locked, the whole unit stays where you built it until the next time the room demands a new shape.

Anything here that stands on the floor with drawers, doors or shelves belongs anchored to the wall. The consumer safety commission launched its anchoring campaign in 2015 and reported ten years later that tip-over injuries and deaths had fallen by nearly half; the instruction behind that number is the one sentence above. An anchoring kit ships in the carton, the job takes about ten minutes with a drill and a stud finder, and it is the last step of the build rather than an optional extra.
