Grey steel sits under open sky between evenings, taking on the temperature of the air around it until you return with a tank and a spark. Ten feet of clearance in every direction is the space you are claiming for the flame, a circle measured from ember to fence, ember to chair, ember to the siding of your house.
Read the federal fire guidance once before the first match. Keep children in sight while the gas is open, and kill the flame before you step through your own door.
A propane fire pit is an outdoor appliance. Keep it at least ten feet from the house or anything that can burn, keep children in sight while it is lit, and put it out before you go inside: that is the federal fire agency wording, and the carton instructions are the authority on the rest.
